MISSION

The Denton County Dash is a free community event to bring awareness to the impact of cardiovascular disease in Denton County. This event provides an opportunity to get out and move!

Did you know cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of Denton County residents and many of the risk factors are preventable? In Denton County, approximately 63.9% of residents are obese. About 4.6% adults from Denton County are in risk of Cardiovascular Disease. These conditions can be prevented or controlled with regular physical activity and balanced eating. It’s time for Denton County to Stop Being Passive and Get Active!

Eligibility - The minimum age to participate in the 5k is 6 and no minimum age for the 1 mile. The right to accept or reject any entry is reserved. For younger participants, please contact info@playtri.com.

5K AWARDS

1st Place Awards will be given to the Masters male / female in 5K and overall male / female winners in the 5K. 1st Place Age group awards will be in 10 year increments.

Only participants in the "timed" race are eligible for awards. This excludes the 1 Mile event.

Weather

Average temperature on race day: low 50 - high 75.

For safety reasons, Playtri Racing reserves the right to modify or cancel a race due to severe weather conditions. When severe weather is present, all precautions will be made to ensure the safety of the athletes.

Chip Timing

This is a chip timed event. Each participant will be required to wear a timing chip in order to be counted in the results. Timing chips are assigned to participants according to bib number. We will be using disposable chips for this event that you will receive with your bib at packet pick up.

BENEFITING CHARITY

The Denton County Dash is a free community event to bring awareness to the impact of cardiovascular disease in Denton County. Whether you have been running for years or are just getting started with a walking program, come Dash the Past with us.

SENIOR ACTIVITIES

1 Mile Walk - New to the Dash this year, the one mile walk will provide an alternative to those who don’t want to run the 5k, but still want to get outdoors, socialize with folks of all ages, and get moving. Benches will be located every quarter of a mile if you want to sit for a few minutes and people watch.

Seniors Helping Seniors - Need assistance with your IPhone, Android, IPad or laptop? Bring it with you and Lewisville High School Seniors with help you learn how to use it.

Walk Across Texas! – Join us as we celebrate the completion of the Walk Across Texas! program in Denton County! Walk Across Texas is an eight-week program designed to encourage an increase in physical activity for participants of all ages! Form a team of 8 people, keep track of any physical activity you do and strive to virtually “walk” the 830 miles across the state of Texas! Starts on February 5, 2018, but can join in at any time! It's Time Texas: Couch Potato to 5K – Join the Lewisville Parks and Recreation Department as they celebrate the completion of the Couch Potato to 5K running program as they cross the finish line at the DASH. This 10-week plan will prepare you to run the 5K. Starts January 27, 2018! Contact Erika Tang at 972-219-5051 or etang@cityoflewisville.com if you want to get registered, get off the couch, and run the 5k.

Walk in my Shoes! – Participate in fun activities to experience what it feels like to grow older and what happens to our bodies as we age. If you would like to volunteer to lead some of these activities and share your aging experience with younger generations, please contact Kim Mathis at (940) 999-1024.

Senior Fitness Testing – Seniors in Motion Adult Fitness Center of Denton is coordinating TWU and UNT Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy students to do a certain number of the simple tests that assess the functional fitness of older adults based on the “Functional Fitness Test”, formally called the “Senior Fitness Test”, out of California State University, Fullerton.

A Matter of Balance Exercise Demonstrations – Learn how to do some exercises that improve flexibility, balance and strength. Developed by the Roybal Center at Boston University, A Matter of Balance is a nationally recognized program that is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.

Power Your Day with Breakfast - Smoothies can be a great way to have breakfast on the run – especially if you have to exercise to make it! Come try some healthy smoothie recipes and take a spin on our smoothie bike!

Growing Herbs with the Denton County Master Gardeners Association – Learn more about growing herbs in Texas from our Denton County Master Gardeners! Herbs are a great way to season your food without adding salt and can be grown in a large garden, in a pot or even grown indoors! Come learn more from trained volunteers!

Exercise Demonstrations – Want to shake up your normal exercise routine? This is your chance to watch demonstrations to see if there is something new you might want to try: Jazzercise, Zumba, Tai Chi, and Gentle Yoga.

Chair Volley Ball – Be active while engaging in some friendly competition. Flower Mound Senior Center will be leading the chair volley ball games and people of all ages are invited to play.
