Any athlete participating in an endurance training program who can safely complete 45-60 minutes of either cycling or running with 2 minutes at a max effort and 4-6 minutes at a tempo effort should do this test.

Having accurate training zones is the easiest way to ensure that the training you are doing matches the goals of your program.

Our blood lactate testing protocol lasts for 45-60 minutes and includes two builds (a short build to max effort followed by a longer build to around tempo effort). We will take 5-9 capillary samples (finger pricks) over the course of the test.

No pre-test protocol is required, though athletes should make sure they are appropriately trained and recovered enough to safely complete a hard effort.

Please note: due to the proprietary nature of our protocol and analysis we DO NOT provide lactate readings with results. Athletes needing lactate readings may provide us with the standard protocol of their choice and we will be happy to perform it and provide readings.

Vo2 max testing provides a peak Vo2 reading for either running or cycling. That reading is closely correlated to Vo2 max and equals milliliters of oxygen per kg of body weight consumed for one minute.

Vo2 max can be tracked over time to determine the impacts of a specific training program, as well as athlete health and performance potential.

This test requires a 10 minute warmup and 8-10 minute build to max intensity while wearing a Vo2 mask (see photos).

This test can be done concurrently with our blood lactate testing protocol.

Run tests will be done on a treadmill, bike tests will be performed with your bicycle on a stationary trainer (rental bikes also available). Keep in mind that Vo2 max will differ between bike and run, so if you need data for both activities make sure you schedule two separate tests.

Pre-test we recommend eating and drinking similarly to how you would prepare for a big workout or race.

Playtri Vo2 Calorie Expenditure provides you with a detailed table of calorie use based on activity and heart rate.

Athletes use this information to create informed nutrition plans for training and competition and may make pacing decisions for longer events based on how quickly the burn glycogen at higher intensities.

We find it is most popular with athletes training for long distance events (where running low on glycogen stores is more likely) and those trying to support recovery and adaptation for heavier training loads.

Advanced Sweat Testing provides you with the amount of sodium you lose per liter of sweat, as well as a personalized hydration plan based on your sodium loss and training/competition goals.

Anyone who plans to do extensive training, particularly in warm environments, will benefit from this test.

Athletes who struggle with cramping and/or dehydration will especially benefit.

This test does not require any exercise protocol. The subject sits in a chair for 25-45 minutes during sweat induction and collection.

Intense (read: sweaty) exercise 2-3 hours prior to testing can impact results, so schedule the test for a day and time when you can avoid exercise immediately prior.

You will receive a printout or PDF following your test that outlines your baseline daily calorie burn, as well as percentage calories used from fat vs carbohydrates, and estimated lifestyle calorie burn (based on activity level).

Individuals wishing to adjust daily caloric intake for weight management purposes, and athletes who need to ensure appropriate caloric intake to support training and competition.

Testing protocol requires the subject to sit in a chair for 20-30 minutes with little to no external stimulation while wearing a Vo2 mask.

For accurate results, subjects must fast for 4 hours prior to testing and avoid exercise and stimulation (including screens, loud music, conversations, etc.) It is frequently easiest for individuals to do this test shortly after waking up.
